Texas heat and cold cycles flex the steel every day, and once a crack starts, it grows. We see this most often on the west-facing side of a gate where the afternoon sun bakes the metal.
- The opener arm is loose or rattling where it bolts to the gate. The bolts may be tight, but the mounting plate has wallowed out or torn free from the frame. This puts stress on the motor and makes the gate jerk when it starts and stops.
- The gate sits crooked when closed, leaving a big gap at the top or bottom. This usually means a hinge weld has failed or the frame has twisted. The opener may still close it, but it is working against bent steel every single cycle.
- You feel a hard shake or shudder as the gate starts moving. That is the opener fighting resistance, generally from a misaligned hinge or a frame section that has bound up. Over time, that shakes the motor mounts loose and shortens the opener’s life.
